Bilal Ashraf’s father’s name is Maqsood Ashraf and his mother’s name is Shaheen Ashraf. His parents belong to a Punjabi origin. He had only one sister, Sadia Ashraf who passed away a few years back. She is the reason he wanted to be an actor. She worked in New York as a director as well as a teacher of filmmaking at New York University. She wanted to improve Pakistan’s cinema and insisted Bilal pursue more knowledge about animation and visual effects from Escape Studios in London. Bilal and his sister together created Radical Films.

EARLY STAGE OF CAREER

Initially, Bilal Ashraf worked as a hedge consultant in New York but he later quit his job and moved to London in order to study animation and visual effects on the insistence of his late sister, Sadia Ashraf. Then in 2014, he did a cameo appearance in the thriller film, O21. In 2016, he did a lead debut in a romantic comedy movie, Janaan, opposite Armeena Khan. His work was appreciated by the critics. As an actor, initially, he only worked in Pakistani movies until recently.

 ACTING CAREER

Jannan being his debut film as a lead had a successful opening. It was directed by Azfar Jafri, written by Osman Khalid Butt, and co-produced by Harem Farooq, Munir Hussain, Imran Raza Kazmi, and Reham Khan, under production banners of IRK Films and Munir Hussain Films, UK. It was released by ARY Films on Eid-ul-Adha.

In 2017, right next year after Janaan, he appeared in a war movie, Yalghaar, which had a decent opening at the box office. Yalghaar was directed by Hassan Rana and produced by MindWorks Media. It was based on the true story of the Pakistan Army’s Swat Operation. The film had really big names in the industry working in it. Shaan Shahid being the lead, along with Humayun Saeed, Adnan Siddiqui, Armeena Khan, Aleeze Nasser, Ayesha Omer, and Sana Bucha Bilal Ashraf got a big breakthrough in this movie.  It is the most expensive Pakistani movie to date. Apart from budget and extensive cast, the film features 150 written characters.

In the same year, another of his movies was released, Rangreza, directed by Amir Mohiuddin and written by Akhtar Qayyum. The movie was a musical romantic drama film. The cast included Gohar Rasheed, Bilal Ashraf, Urwa Hocane, and Ghana Ali as the main leads. It was produced by Yasir Mohiuddin and Usman Malkani under MH Films and Malkani Films respectively. Though the movie couldn’t go well at the box office and failed badly. The critics had nothing good to say about the movie.

He stayed absent from the screen after the failure of his movie, Rangreza. In an interview, he explained his long absence after Rangreza. He said that considering its missed potential, he’ll look more seriously at the scripts from now on. He also shared the fact that he took acting classes in the United Kingdom as well as theater classes with actor Sunil Shankar in the NAPA, in Karachi.

In 2019, he played the leading role in Ehteshamuddin’s directorial debut, Superstar, produced by Momina Duraid. He did this super blockbuster opposite Mahira Khan. Superstar becomes the highest-grossing film for Bilal Ashraf. The movie was a romantic, musical-drama film, starring Bilal Ashraf and Mahira Khan. It was directed by Mohammed Ehteshamuddim and produced by Momina & Duraid Films. The music and screenplay were done by Azaan Sami Khan.

The story of the film revolved around Noori (played by Mahira Khan), who works in a theatre run by her uncle Agha Jan (played by Nadeem Baig). The film was about her entry into the film industry and her romance and betrayal. It was released on the occasion of Eid al-Adha on 12 August 2019 by Hum Films under Momina & Duraid Films.

In 2021, Bilal acted in his debut telefilm, Aik Hai Nigar. It was another big success opposite Mahira Khan. In the telefilm, Bilal played the role of Johar Ali Khan, husband of the three-star general of the Pakistani army, Nigar Johar. This telefilm by ARY Digital was directed by Adnan Sarwar and written by Umera Ahmad.

2021 has importance for Bilal Ashraf as he also became a producer. He started his production house under the name of Behive Transmedia with director-actor Ehteshamuddin. Their first release was the historical drama miniseries, Khaab Toot Jaatay Hain, based on the book The Wastes of Times by Syed Sajjad Hussain.

In 2023, Bilal did his debut drama, Yunhi, opposite Maya Ali. The drama is currently on air, in which Bilal is playing the role of Dr, Dauod Basharat. The drama is going successful and viewers are enjoying it a lot. It’s written by Mohammad Ehteshamuddin, written by Sarwat Nasir, and produced by Momina Duraid.
